The Nebraska Legislature created laws in 1969 to combine 154 special interest groups into 24 multipurpose Natural Resources Districts (NRDs). A merger in 1989 reduced that number to 23 NRDs. The legislation provided the NRDs with various responsibilities. Directors are elected by local voters, serve 4-year terms and govern the NRD activities. The Natural Resources Districts became operational in 1972.
NRDs provide a wide variety of services to protect Nebraska's natural resources, including water quality, water quantity, water pollution, flood control, and wildlife conservation.
