 Nematode species list
(Thorne and Malek, 1968)

In 1968 Gerald Thorne and Richard Malek published a survey of plant parasitic nematodes found in the northern Great Plains, a region generally encompassing the states of Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota. They described approximately 100 species of nematodes, many of them new to the science. Their survey focused on native grassland, including many sites that had never been plowed. Thorne and Malek were surprised by the predictibility and homogeneity of the prairie nematode community. They hypothesized that the great herds of buffalo, wallowing in mud during their migrations, spread nematodes across the plains.

We present the nematode species they described, together with an abbreviated and annotated version of their original descriptions. We are adding photographs, scanning electron micrographs, and molecular markers to the species descriptions, as well as more detailed information concerning their distribution.
