WHAT TO WEAR WHEN LOOKING FOR AND KEEPING A JOB

The way you look and the clothes you wear says something about yourself to others as well as to yourself. Give a positive image about who you are through your clothes.

Tips

Present yourself positively.
You need to make a good "first impression." In about 30 seconds people make judgments about you. A positive image and appearance do not replace skills, but may help you get a chance to show what you can do.
If you have a job where you meet the public, you need to consider how well you look. Dress for work and when on the job, focus on doing the job. Your clothing should not get in the way of your work.
When applying for a job, think about the type of job it is. What kind of clothes will you be expected to wear? Men: Will you need to have pants, shirt and a jacket or clean work pants and a shirt? Women: Will you need a suit, a skirt and blouse with a jacket or pants and a blouse? You don't want to over dress or under dress for the job you are applying.
Wear clothes that are clean and ironed
Be well groomed. Keep your hair clean and wear it in a style that is becoming to you.
Keep hands and fingernails clean. For women, do not wear chipped nail polish as it detracts.
Use perfume sparingly. If in doubt, don't use any.
For women, wear makeup that is natural and flattering to your personal coloring. Too much makeup is distracting.
Appear sure of yourself, use a firm hand shake, and look at the person who is doing the interviewing.
Listen to the tone of voice you use. Speak clearly to be understood during an interview.
When sitting during the job interview, sit just a bit forward.
