Managing Listserv via Web Browser Alfred Stark, astark1@unl.edu

The web listserv management interface permits you to do all of the same things that you can do by e-mail, with a different interface that many may find easier to use. A problem that is avoided by using the web interface, is the Lotus Notes Full Client formatting issues that may occur when sending e-mail to Internet users (Listserv is an Internet process), such as unintended wrapped lines and entirely blank messages.

Set Up of Listserv Web Management Interface

• To use the web interface for UNL Listservs go to:
  http://listserv.unl.edu/cgi-bin/wa?LMGT1 (case sensitive link)
  This will take you to the Listserv Management "Login Required" page.

Sorry, to use the web interface you are going to need yet another password, as the password referred to here is your Listserv Administration Password, NOT your e-mail account password. For the e-mail address, please use the e-mail address you provided in the owner field of the "Listserv Request Form".

• If this is your first time to access this page, you will need to set up a new password first, so click on the get a new LISTSERV password link in the first paragraph.
• This step will generate an e-mail message that will require you to read the e-mail message sent to you by Listserv and then click on web link within that e-mail, to confirm that you are an authenticated user of that e-mail address.
• Go back to the web page in the first step (http://listserv.unl.edu/cgi-bin/wa?LMGT1).
• Login with your e-mail address and your Listserv Management Password (NOT your e-mail password). If you forget this password, no one can look it up, but you can reset it using the "get a new Listserv password" step again.

If you click on "Login" you will have access from this computer until you click on "Log Off". Exiting the browser or even shutting down the machine will NOT log you off. When using a public computer, it is strongly recommened, that you use "Login without a cookie", as you must remember to log off when you are done, or someone else will be able to use your account. If you click on "Login without a cookie", your access will expire in 15 minutes and you never need to wory about logging off.

• Next you are on the "List Management" page, where you have the full selection of management functions.
On this page:
• if you are an owner of a single listserv, it will indicate its name near the top of the page.
• if you are an owner of multiple listservs, you will need to select which listserv you want to work with from the "-Please select a list-" drop down menu.
• if it indicates that you are not an owner of any listserv or if not all of your listservs are listed, this is a result of a different e-mail address as an owner. Please contact Alfred Stark, astark1@unl.edu, 402-472-5615 for assistance in getting this resolved.
There are several options available to you, however the often used ones are:
• Help - there is information for some of your questions.
• Subscribers - used to add/delete members, change individual member settings, and "review" the membership list.
• Configuration - used to change configuration changes, most notably change the owners. If you are changing owners, be sure that you do not remove your e-mail address as an owner until done with all other changes, as this will be the last change you can make, since you will no longer be an owner.
• Bulk - helpful when adding/deleting many members.

Notes:

• I recommend that Lotus Notes Users specify their "Internet Address" when setting up a listserv and for their web management account. The "Internet Address" is the e-mail address you use when sending e-mail to Internet users. If you are uncertain as to what that is, you may send e-mail to:
  WhatIsMyEmail@UNL.EDU
  In that message it does not matter what you specify for a subject or put in the message fields, as both may even be blank. You will receive an e-mail response from a machine that will clarify for you the information in your "From:" field when you send messages to Internet users. If you prefer to use a different address, that will work for the web management, but not for the e-mail management.
• Both the e-mail and web management have their place, use which ever you are more comfortable with.
