- UNLServe accounts should use:
- webmail01.unl.edu/unlserve/imp/
- For other accounts that are on POP servers, users may utilize the following:

I do not know the exact e-mail address I use when I send e-mail to Internet users?
- You may provide others different e-mail addresses (actual account, CSO alias, Lotus Notes alias, previous e-mail account, etc.) that will successfully route e-mail to you. However, there are certain services, such as listserv owner functions, that require the exact e-mail address you use to send e-mail to Internet users. In other words, what is in the "From:" field of messages you send.
- Full Client users: Your Internet e-mail address is in your person document. Basically, it is the shortname@unlnotes.unl.edu, unless specified otherwise. If that is unclear, another way to find it is to send a note to:
- WhatIsMyEmail@UNL.EDU
- and minutes later you will receive an e-mail from a machine that reports to you, the exact e-mail address you use when you send e-mail to Internet addresses.
- Web Client users: The address you logged in with is what is used.
- POP Client users: You will generally see the "From:" line on the message you are composing. If not, you can send an e-mail to yourself and view the "From:" line on the message received.
Why do I have trouble with e-mail, except when I am in my office, when using a POP program on my laptop?
The situation discussed here, is that for example, when you are in your office using your laptop with a POP e-mail program and all works fine. However, when you move to different locations (home, different city, different building in the same city), often you experience trouble sending e-mail and even sometimes reading e-mail. This situation does occurs often and will in the future happen nearly even more, as this is related to efforts to reduce spam e-mail. As you move to different sites you often are connecting with different Internet Service Providers(ISP), which are working cooperatively to verify origination source of e-mail messages.
This situation will likely result in your receiving an error message in regards to: "SMTP Server", "SMTP Host", "Outgoing Server" or "Client Host". This generally indicates that you need to change the "SMTP Server" setting in your e-mail program.
This response refers to the needed change as the SMTP Server, however different e-mail programs specify this with different names, such as SMTP Host or Outgoing Server. This response will simply refer to this as SMTP Server.
A quick test you can use to verify the current SMTP Server setting is a problem, is to access your e-mail via a web browser. You may want to see the question How do I read my e-mail using a web browser? to check this out. If you can send/receive e-mail via the web browser, this is a good indication that the SMTP Server setting does need to be changed in your POP e-mail program for that program to work at this location. Keep in mind, that using the web browser to deal with your e-mail at a temporary location is an option without making any changes at all.
To change the SMTP Server setting, you should ONLY make ONE configuration change with this information.
- Find the location of where the SMTP Server is specified.
- Make note of the current SMTP Server setting. Remember, you are going to need to use setting when you get back to your regular working location.
- Change the setting to the SMTP Server host of the ISP your are connected to. If you don't know what that is, a good guess would be to specify
- mail.ISP.ADDRESS
where ISP.ADDRESS is the name of the ISP you are connected to.
- Some specific examples include:
- when on the UNL network, specify mail.unl.edu
- when on ALLTEL.NET , specify mail.alltel.net
- when on INEBRASKA.COM, specify mail.inebraska.com
What can I do about email attachments that are being blocked?
There are multiple reasons why you e-mail with attachments are being blocked and the reject message is not always clear as to why. However, most frequently it is due to the file size and you are not very likely to get the administrator of the e-mail host blocking you to change that limit. Regardless of the reason you attachment is being blocked, there is another option you may want to consider. That is to place the file(s) on an FTP Server and then send the download link of your file(s) in your e-mail message.
